Marijuana replaces Ritalin in treatment for ADD/ADHD - Video
Dr Claudia Jenson, who is a consultant pediatrician from USC, has come up with a novel way of treating ADD/ADHD, WITHOUT any of the unwanted side effects which can result from using popularly prescribed medicines.
Attention deficit Disorder, or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADD/ADHD) is a biological, brain based condition that is characterized by poor attention and distractibility and/or hyperactive and impulsive behaviors. It is one of the most common mental disorders that develop in children. Symptoms can continue into adolescence and adulthood.
If left untreated, ADHD can lead to poor school/work performance, poor social relationships and a general feeling of low self esteem.
The normal course of treatment for a child diagnosed with ADD/ADHD, is a course of methylphenidate, better known as Ritalin.
Methylphenidate (MPH) is a prescription stimulant commonly used to treat Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD. It is also one of the primary drugs used to treat the daytime drowsiness symptoms of narcolepsy and chronic fatigue syndrome. The drug is seeing early use to treat cancer-related fatigue.
As always there is a flip-side to these prescription drugs, and in the case of Ritalin, substance abusers have found various ways to ingest the drug recreationally, which gives an effect similar to cocaine or amphetamine so the use of ritalin is to be closely monitored.
For the child diagnosed with ADD/ADHD, the side effects of using Ritalin, are many, including psychosis (abnormal thinking or hallucinations), difficulty sleeping, stomach aches, diarrhea, headaches, lack of hunger (leading to weight loss) and dry mouth. In some cases, the use of Ritalin has led to death.
If Ritalin or its side effects, are causing your children problems, ask your doctor about using marijuana as an alternative.

I do also have positive experience with medicinal cannabis. I used MC for 14 years before being diagosed ADHD. The trouble (anxiety, impulsivity, alcoholism, depressive state, ...) gave sense to my atypical cannabis use, dayly, early in the morning and all day, even increased in depressive period.
With a couple of patients we built the following web site http://mcforadhd.free.fr , in the wish to inform and maybe get in touch with other patients interested in involving in our cause : fight for the recongnization of our ADHD and MC treatment.

This is so true!!!! I have been struggling with ADHD since I was diagnosed at the age of 6...I was first prescribed Methylphenidate AKA Ritalin...It had many different effects on my body from weight loss to drowsiness...I feel as though I was used like a lab rat for most of my adolescent life...I was prescribed over 20 different types of prescription treatments for ADHD, and they all had bad side effects that outweighed the benefits...We kept on trying new drugs to try and suppress the ADHD but none seemed to work....By the time I reached 12 years old I started experimenting with marijuana...The way I felt on "weed" is better than the way I felt on any prescription drug. I am now 20 years old and I am still using "weed" to help me "be more me"...I no longer use any prescription drugs... I feel better today that I have felt in my entire life...The effects of cannabis sativa completely reverse the effects of ADHD...I have noticed that my attention span is greater,...
Just like to add my affirmation of these experiences. I am fifty two years old and have had ADD all of my life. My son has it as well and we have been to hell and back as a result of the complete ignorance, including our own, on the problem. There has been a lot of information developed and available in the past decade but this was not in time to spare us the worst impacts of ADD that is, low self-esteem as a result of the mis-attribution of behaviors that accompany, indeed, characterize the disorder. In retrospect I can see that my father also was ADD. In any event, I self-medicated most of my life with marijuana and then when I was diagnosed a few years ago I began using conventional treatments. While ritalin aided my focus it made me feel dirty and gritty like sleeping in your clothes all night and then skipping your shower. While Straterra didn't produce that edgy feeling, it was not consistent with helping my focus and the potential side effects of liver problems made me...
I also recommend doing some research in ADHD and diet. I have found my daughter and ex-husband suffer stronger symptoms since my ex and I have been divorced and my daughter started eating school funded lunch and breakfast.
I have a nutrition background and have seen quite an intense relationship between the lack of essential fatty acids (Omega 3 & Omega 6) and ADHD/ADD behavior.
It seems that the medical industry would rather make money selling you pills to treat you for life, than to have you permanently change your eating habits.
I was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 12 I never took meds for the problem but at the age of 16 I smoked pot and noticed a huge difference in all of my school work, music activities, and sports. ( I WAS CALM AND PAID ATTENTION ) This had been something I had always had a problem with before. After I realized that Marijuana was helping me in a natural way I began to use on a normal basis, as tho this was my medicine.
I'm not expecting anyone to read this, but i have to let it out. I feel like my whole life has revolved around ADD and i never knew it. As i look back on the only thing that seemed to cure my symptoms. I got in a lot of trouble and though i learned a lot, i wish i would have known sooner. I self medicated for a LONG time and i believe i would be left with no problems or trouble if i would have self medicated my whole life nonstop. But life is a lesson i suppose.
My name is Rick, I'm 17 and have been recently diagnosed with ADD. My whole life I knew there was something different about me, but I didn't know what. Looking back, in 3rd grade I would get in trouble for daydreaming in class which led to incomplete assignments, but I wasn't hyper, so I didn't think there was anything wrong and honestly at the time I didn't believe any substance put in my body would change anything. haha I thought drugs were a myth :p Since 4th grade I have been a graphic designer, web designer, mu...
i was diagnosed with ADD at the age of 6 but my parents didnt tell me and refused to put me on treatment. i have always had a more difficult time paying attention durring the day then my classmates and becoming very hyper or emotional later in the afternoon.
(im 16 now and was diagnosed with ADHD one year ago).
i am now taking vyvanse to treat my ADHD but it has as many con's as it does pro's. i spend most the day with a wierd feeling in my stomach that doesnt allow me to eat more than a few bites of food until dinner, i get light headed, and feel faint and weak 3 days out of the week.
i have been using marijuana recreationially for about 3 years and i KNOW that it helps me focus, follow a train of though, get motivated, and help with my anxiety
i undoubtably support the use of marijuana in treatment with ADHD in teens and adults along with other illnesses. but one thing to concider is that it effects everybody in a slightly different way so it may not be the same for eve...
I was diagnosed with hyperactivity when I was 6 and treated for my behavior problems. I am now 44 and wished I did't resist dealing with my challenges when I was in my 20's. My life has been one struggle after another.
I self-medicated for my whole life and recently stopped being a chronic users. I found that marijuana increased my depression and made me isolate all my life. It also would make me too open with my energy such that I would quickly get overwhelmed in social situations.
Since there is really no way to regulate what you are getting, the strain, amount of THC percentage, and that if affects people differently, use it is a little tricky. I definietly cannot socialize on it and cannot image working on it.
I have heard that there is a dutch company that owns a strain of MJ that is low in THC and high in cannabinoids. THD is the phychotic while the Cannabinoids has the focus and calming effect.
I'm 21 and was diagnosed about a year ago with ADHD. All my life I knew there was something very different about me but I worked literally 3-4+ longer and harder in school and other environments such as sports.
I have struggled soo much with the negative stigmas of people not accepting my ADHD which has honestly brought much depression, anger, frustration that has recently been addressed through psychotherapy. I have been taking Adderall and it works ok but my tolerance has built extremely fast and the actual benefits are diminishing.
When I smoke weed, I can finally turn off the little robot or motor that is cranked so hard that I get a relief that is literally undescribable.
I have trouble focusing on it and can't really get much done on it, but like comment mentioned above-there are so many strands of weed which I have experimented with quite a few and I feel with a monitored dose of a strand that is legitimate- medically this could possibly be the best thing for me and ...
I am a 37 y/o white male diagnosed early in life with adhd. I guess I was around 5 or 6 when first diagnosed. I have been prescribed just about everything you can imagine and as of two weeks ago just stop taking adderall again. I am on my fourth marriage and have never held a job longer than 2.5 years. I was kicked out of high school and through my childhood was in and out of counselors and shrinks offices constantly. As hard as it was I managed to stay out of an major trouble. Also I was able to pull myself together long enough to get my ged and at age 28 I went back to school and earned my associates degree in computer information technology. Also I graduated with honors and a 3.89 gpa as well as several awards. Interestingly enough my adhd med throughout college was weed. During my current marriage my wife has observed me on adderall as well as marijuana seperately and she will tell you she would much rather me be on marijuana. I have known this for years when I smoke I can concentr...
My name is Laura, and I was diagnosed with A.D.D about 4 or 5 years ago. I took Dextrometaphine (Dexidrine) for school.. earning good marks in school finally. However, a few years later I found that Dexidrine made me quite irritable, so I stopped taking it. I have been smoking Marijuana for a few years now, and I graduated high school without taking any meds!
