Cannabis in Japan: Can they really be so naive?
Japan, and its Japanese citizens, can have some strange idio-syncracies. In a way, it’s kind of known for some of those things. Then again, sometimes things are halfway there, which in this case is actually quite bizarre.

Japan is a master at importing culture while stripping it of its roots; rap culture has been imported while leaving behind the gansta/ghetto/etc culture.

Hip hop is really hot here as well and there seem to be many decent dancers (although I wonder if there are too many of them). This has also happened to Reggae as well.

Cannabis and its "icons" retains a healthy cultural attraction to the Japanese public.

Japanese weed culture seems to exist somewhere in Shrodinger’s house. Maybe his closet or his basement. Possibly even his attic.

Wherever it is, he hasn’t opened and checked inside for a long time. It’s interesting that in such a place as Japan, such a state exists for something like weed. You can get anything related to weed except for weed. It’s just something that hardly anyone seems to do here.

But why is this? You could probably guess, but then again, there’s a chance that something that looks like me can instantaneously appear somewhere in the universe (which will approach 1 as time approaches infinity). Mostly, it’s that the government said it’s illegal. Now, in most countries this means fuckall, but until everyone starts doing it in Japan, only the rebels will do it. This attitude has been put into a motto, “If everyone crosses when the light is red then it is OK”. For the most part, this motto is really helpful (it helped me find the JLPT test center), but then you get things like the weed thing.

If you ask someone why they won’t smoke weed, they’ll probably say that it’s because it’s dangerous or illegal. It’s not an issue that most people have researched, hell, people everywhere don’t seem to have any evidence for their beliefs besides personal experience and emotional reactions. This mindset (combined with the Japanese drug policy) leads to low supply and low demand; no one wants to buy and no one wants to sell, the yakuza don’t even sell that much of it. Speed is a much more popular drug (excluding beer and cigarettes) over here in Sun Source.

So why then do some people prominently display marijuana leaves? I’ve even seen it on baby clothes. They do know that it’s weed, right? Maybe this casual half acceptance will lead to decriminalization by the time my generation gets into the Diet. Or I could wake up.
