A quick fix for our broken political system
by Bobby Fontaine
August 13, 2008

Elections cost a lot of money and volunteer time but get nothing done but give someone a political office that they might or might not be successful at getting anything positive accomplished from. A unique thing about our country is that the Constitution and Bill of Rights protect our rights as citizens to solve our own problem without government. So really there’s no reason for politicians to have to wait until they’re in office to prove they can lead. In fact once they’ve taken an oath of office, the rules they have to follow might hinder or even prevent them from getting things done that they otherwise could have accomplished on their own if they had enough backing to do so.

What if a reality TV show was used to give Obama and McCain a chance to prove they can get things done by doing them using money they would have spent mocking each other in TV commercials where they have to put their efforts where their mouth is? What if Obama built an ethanol refinery while McCain set up an oil rig where we follow them through the process to see how they handle it. Or they do the same with any other project they come up with that they believe can do something good so we see how their personal judgements panned out along with seeing how they get things done, whether they’re tyrants or whiners, or do they get down in the trenches and lead as team players. What we never get to see is what kind of people our leaders truly are. Even once they leave office, although we have a pretty good idea of what they’re all after all the mistakes or successes they achieve, we still miss a lot about who the real them is. And no matter who won the reality TV show or election, which could both be merged into one if it turned out to be the way to go, I bet whatever was accomplished by the candidates during the process would be good for the communities they served and the nation. So at least we would have that as a result of all the attention we put into the election cycle instead of having nothing but empty promises.

What if all elections were done this way with local elections being staged from free public access channels and state elections being from local TV stations, for profit. Of course national elections would be done on prime time TV and there could even be a show for political parties where they mount national efforts to spend billions of dollars getting positive things done to prove which party is best. I mean both parties are talking about building a wind farm across the Midwest to produce free electricity where the openly obstacle to doing it is who is going to fund it. With all the money being wasted on this election cycle, they could build it now racing to see who does the best job trying.

Think of all the billions of dollars that would be going into projects to do good things while we would get to see what these people are all about. It might even help them get their mind out of the pockets of big money donors and away from corruption because they might actually learn how good it feels to be recognized for getting good things done. I mean everything they would do would have to be good or they would know they would lose, which unlike once they’re in office, they can go the wrong way far too easily because they’re already elected and have much less to lose. Then so many problems would get solved before elections were over that we wouldn’t need new laws passed forcing us to do what we really want to do anyway.

So eventually political office could become largely ceremonious because all the major issues of the day would be solved during the election cycle. Then a new election cycle would begin to solve the next round of problems which would be supported by elected officials who got elected through this new process where they could help with bureaucratic barriers to projects trying to be accomplished in the election cycle. Like on the reality TV show Extreme Home Makeover where someone who has personal troubles living in a problematic home has their house renovated into a luxury mansion in a week by hundreds of volunteers and money from sponsors. They must get special attention from local bureaucrats to help them accomplish their goals in such a short period of time while also respecting building codes.

Why can’t a politician mount an effort like, lets say cleaning up a polluting industry by investing campaign money in technologies to get it done using volunteers to accomplish the goal instead of how now they would only say they will do it but once they get in office, nothing gets done while all the people who would have been glad to help get it accomplished are worn out and broke from donating all their money and time to the current process.

Think of all the elected officials who spend money on posters and TV ads election after election while running around throwing extravagant parties to raise more money even once they’re in office. Now think of them putting that money into real projects instead. And then think of the ones who didn’t get elected doing the same thing. And think of all the people who don’t run for office now because they don’t like politics who would enter into this kind of process just to do something good or be on TV.

Think about the audition process with all kinds of people coming up with all kinds of ideas where then a choice has to be made for who gets to be on the show to actually put their plan to work. I swear the ratings for shows like that would be so high it would be off the charts which means that on top of putting all the campaign money to work that we waste now, the election cycle would actually turn a huge profit, at least until the world ran out of problems to solve.

It would change the world as a new level of democracy is explored

I believe an election process like this would change everything in the US and that a lot of other corrupt governments around the world would follow this kind of format if it worked. I think it would make politics fun and interesting changing everything that’s boring and frustrating about it now into an exciting challenge where even the people who are the problem with it these days would like it better. It would be honest and wholesome in a way that no one could resist.

And you know how on reality TV shows, the contestants are always experiencing huge life changing moments because they’ve pushed themselves to the their limits outside of their normal comfort zones? That’s the kind of things that would happen to our leaders before they’re given power. It would change them and their motives for what they want to accomplish while reminding them that we are always watching them instead of the other way around.

But there are obstacles

Perhaps the notion of political reality TV is nothing more than a great sounding marketing scheme that has no real potential. But I get lost in dreaming about it every time this vision reawakens in my mind, like I do with a song destined to be a hit that I know how far up the charts it will climb the first time I hear it. I’m never wrong about music. I don’t think I am wrong about this either. I think political reality TV has legs. I believe it has more than that. I see it as the only way out of the current dysfunctional system used worldwide that’s leading us to our demise.

Sometimes I even feel that the hand of something more powerful than us must be guiding us through the status quo for us to have not already tumbled over the edge of extinction. Something has to change. The political process has to be much more open and honest than what we have now while it will have to actually get things done. We can’t lie to ourselves forever. The human race has grown too big and complex to keep playing the same kinds of games we’ve used to provide leadership since the dawn of time.

We didn’t used to be powerful enough of a species to screw up the whole planet. We need to solve our problems, really solve them, not philosophically or ideologically but actually solve them. It’s more important to get them right than worry about who gets credit for it. Who gets to be our seeming favorite royal heads of state now are who is making such a mess of everything. Many problems don’t demand a debate but the implementation of the correct solution. But what we get is politics that provides programs that don’t work using answers to question that don’t apply to the problem we want solved.

Our problems need solutions that are correct having nothing to do with opinions. The future needs facts, much of which we have access to now but can’t put to work because the old system only allows solutions that are backed by wealth and power which almost universally are not in our best interest, even for those who back them. In fact quite often they only make things worse when it was vital to our future that it be gotten right when it was implemented.

We can’t keep sending our leaders into the dark halls of our capitols to come up with new directions to solve our problems where all that‘s really being done is they’re serving their friends and themselves our money like they’re at an all-you-can-eat-buffet where the more problems they create for our us, the more money we have to give them to solve them in the future. We need problems fixed and we need to see it happen so we can relax and move onto dealing the next range of issues. I’ve never been able to think of any other way to make it happen but put it out in the open in contests that put all our resources to work accomplishing goals that will further our American dreams rather then just talking about it.

The truth is that all the other systems of governing human beings throughput history have proven to be nothing more than huge anchors weighing us down where we have always had to make the sacrifice of supporting them in order to provide us a sense of order and security. But now that most of the human race is tuned into new communications technologies that can change all that, it’s obviously time for us to evolve. I think the dissatisfaction with the election process nowadays will lead to political reality TV being the new wave of how to solve our problems as we enter intro a new age in self-governing. I have no idea why it hasn’t happened already.

Well really I do understand why - dinosaurs. It seems in order for us to evolve, we still have to have a cataclysmic event to render the current system extinct before those who profit from it now are willing to let it go. I think it has already happened but they are too bull headed to see it while thinking smiling for the camera is enough to take us into the future. Change is hard even for our exalted leaders, especially if it means in order to get there, they would be challenged to prove themselves to be able to do their jobs.

Can children actually run for political office?

I wonder how many of them would like this idea. And I wonder how many would still be around if put to the test. I think the best that we have now to choose from as potential leaders have the good sense to want nothing to do with the currents system. I wonder how many of them would seek public service in a reality TV kind of format where they have to do more than talk. I wonder how many children today would have full heads of steam built up around being inspired to solve problems they learned about growing up if they had this kind of process to look forward to. In fact I see no reason why children who have what it takes couldn’t compete in reality TV today, they just might not be able to take office if they won.

If we’re ever going to change, I think Americans would agree we have to head towards a more open process rather than closing it off further than it already is. We certainly don’t want to venture away from democracy so it has to become more democratic. TV and the internet would have to play a role in it, otherwise how else would we do it. We already use TV to a great extent to follow the process but there’s still nowhere near enough transparency for the real issues of the day to be solved so they don’t develop into worse problems.

Do we need to police our leaders to know every detail of their lives?

What would we be the answer without political reality TV, put our elected officials under microscopes 24 hours a day so we know what they’re doing? Even if we could do it, no one would watch because politicians lives are too boring. But making the primary instrument of change the election cycle by it becoming entertaining reality TV shows about getting real problems solved, that would work. It would really work.

It has my vote, what about yours? If so, don’t contact your elected officials to tell them your thoughts on the matter like you might do with most other issues. For this issue, contact Hollywood, grand central for reality TV. But therein lies another problem. I don’t know if you’ve noticed but reality TV first started out focused on average people with interesting personalities and stories to tell. Now it’s focused more on already established stars who we already know everything about. I didn’t understand it at first. But becoming a fan of a reality TV star who wasn’t known before she was on TV, I realized the reason for the change.

Stars can’t become stars of average people, it just isn’t done

See stars have to be careful of giving too much attention to normal people because their fan base might get upset by them not being chosen as the ones who to their attention. Many times fans believe they have actual relationships with the stars they worship who don’t actually know anything about them, maybe not even knowing they exist. But see stars are just regular people like you and me. So when they watch reality TV, they’re just as drawn to some of the contestants as anyone else might be.

What I mean is that stars are just as prone to being fans as anyone else, even more so because they have the ability to meet who they feel drawn towards. The problem is when stars become fans of regular normal people, it offsets the established dichotomy that separates stars from everyone else. It’s the same with royalty or the super wealthy. Our leaders in Washington set themselves up in similar positions although all they are elected to do is work, not entertain and create a fan base who prevents them from being able to get too close to their constituents. So Hollywood appears to have no interest in the rest of us having a chance to share the spotlight with their cash cows just as our leaders in Washington wouldn’t.

So how can this dream ever come true if the people who hog the airwaves aren’t willing to share their prestige with normal folk in order to get the world’s problems solved?

I’ll tell you my strategy. I’m working on it right now. I only have time to write this article because I’m waiting for a piece of video equipment to arrive to help get my first reality TV show ready to be edited and sent off to my local public access TV channel. Free TV is everywhere. It’s that channel that’s usually so boring or strange that most people don’t watch it. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Those stations populate most regions of the nation. They’re a huge untapped resource, like off shore drilling or wind farms throughput the Midwest.

What I’m producing now is called “The Lorton Show.” I live in Lorton. The name can be adopted to fit any region in the country where anyone can produce one for themselves. All I did was buy a camcorder from Ebay and tour the town with it. The first show is in the works. I went to a historical federal prison that used to house inmates from Washington DC that is just up the street from my home. It’s been shut down and is being turned into parks and an art center. So I took my audience on a tour of the park facilities.

The idea is to produce my first show with just me and the camera while offering anyone around town a chance to be on TV doing whatever they want no matter what it is even if it is to just be on TV, to say high to their family, to support their candidate for president, support a sports team, showoff their talents, whatever they can think of. My plan was to keep producing shows this way until people started to call to be on the show. Once I establish a voice in the community, I‘ll promote my political reality TV show idea hoping it will catch on and get national attention for being the first one, which is still the plan. And I want to see change so bad that if you steal my idea or do a better job than me, I couldn’t become more pleased with your success.

The deer and the antelope appear to support my plan

But check this out. I toured the prison grounds. Near the end, I got a little lost on a path in the woods where I had s strange encounter with a deer who gave me the opportunity to film it doing a little dance while stranding right in front of me. It was really one of the coolest wildlife experiences I’ve ever had in my life. But there was more to it than that.

When I first tiptoed around the bush to get a good shot at it, as I zoomed in, as soon as my lens hit its eyes looking straight at me, my bicycle tire blew. It was so loud it sounded like a small caliber rifle being shot which startled me. I turned around to see who was dumb enough to be poaching deer while I was standing there with a camera in my hand when I realized what happened. Then I went back to watching this ten point buck showoff for the camera.

But see things like that happen to me all the time, things that make me think there’s more to life than what we see and understand. But this time I captured it on camera as part of a TV show. Up to that point in the day, the footage I had was good but it wasn’t great. Now it had a great ending for the show so it was like there was a magical force that wanted my show to work pushing good luck in my direction. Whether there is magic like this in the world or not, I can’t say for sure or prove that it exists. But if it does, I believe it supports the idea of these kinds of reality TV shows. Not convinced?

So I crossed the rock bridge to the other side of the creek walking my bicycle back to the road and began the hike home. I was a few minutes into the trek when I heard there had been an earthquake in LA while listening to my radio headset, the 5.4 one that happened on July 29th. I’d been listening to it all day and only turned it off to film the deer. So I figured it might have happened around the same time the bicycle tire blew. I later heard that it happened fifteen minutes before the broadcast which was right about the time the deer encounter took place.

So what right?

OK, lets back up. I’ve followed earthquakes from the perspective that they’re caused when regions suffering from severe drought get a lot of rain. I track them daily and build charts to prove it. My technique never misses but there is no social mechanism for me to showcase my science since I’m not a scientists with a degree where the politics of science is almost as corrupt as our political process, maybe even worse. It’s why I came up with this reality TV show idea in the first place, because I’ve been predicting cataclysmic earthquakes with great accuracy for ten years and no one cares. This way, I can let you decide whether my concerns need further investigation rather than having it summarily dismissed by people who you would think would have the most interest in knowing if there is something there that needs to be looked into or not

Earthquakes in Hollywood

I was inspired to pursue a political reality TV show watching the reality show Big Brother. I became a big fan of Daniele Donato. Her and her father won the game brilliantly last year. So I tried to recruit them to be candidates on the show. They did show interest in it but Hollywood didn’t. Daniele and I stayed friends. She lives in Los Angeles. I was following the drought in the Southeast as it caused earthquakes patterns around the world including LA. I was expecting a big one somewhere in the world when the drought ended so I worried about her. That lead to my creating videos from my work to prove what I claimed by following it as it happened in hopes of being able to get someone to take me seriously before it was too late.

The video is called “What cause earthquakes - and Why? Part 4”

Unfortunately, although my videos are fairly clear in showing there is something to what I’m saying, still there’s no interest in taking anyone without a PHD in seismology seriously on the topic even if it means just watching a half hour video.

The day the drought ended just before the onset of summer caused it to come back again, the earthquake in Sichuan China hit. The video shows hundreds of smaller ones correlated to rain passing through the drought region in the Southeast which being followed by the China quake suggests strongly big earthquakes happen when groundwater levels return to normal after bad droughts.

This is relevant because I wrote an article a month before the July 29 China quake predicting earthquakes in California as a result of the server drought and wildfires they’re still having there now.  It’s called "California going wrong way with new pollution control measures"

It was read by 455 people. The drought is not over yet so there are still more much larger earthquakes to come unless I am totally wrong with what I claim.

China causing us earthquakes after we did the same to them

The LA earthquake doesn’t appear to have been caused by rain in California but rather by China trying to clean up its air quality in Beijing for the Olympics at same time they were using missiles to explode silver iodide over clouds to force rain in drought regions. Atmospheric weight changes caused when pollution levels are severely altered because of the way greenhouse gases effects water vapor making it sink link a rock rather than float like a balloon has shown by my standards to cause earthquakes. This and rain falling in drought ridden land were happening around Beijing when the earthquake in LA struck.

So the deer stopping to be filmed just as my bicycle tire blew at the same time an earthquake occurred I predicted out of concern an ex reality TV star who I wanted to be a candidate on the worlds first reality TV show which all happened as I shot my pilot project from which to launch a local political reality TV show where the video of the deer and the story about getting the footage might be what leads to the show being interesting enough to get off the ground is, well, magical to say the least, at least it is to me.

Time has a purpose

I think things happen for a reason as do many other people. But this time it appears I caught it on tape. In fact a similar set of circumstances happened when shooting the next video for the show. It happened at the end of the tour like the one before. It was by a creek only this time just after I crossed a rock bridge over it instead of before I crossed. And it was a person instead of an animal, a human animals, two of them, instead of a deer that I caught on tape.

They were picnicking. I misunderstood them to say they were homeless. I asked if they wanted to tell their story on TV. We cleared up the confusion. Then one of them said she wanted to make an appeal to the community for a doctor who would accept her insurance so she could get reconstructive surgery. She hadn’t been able to find one who was willing to deal with her HMO for over 5 years. She gave the camera a passionate plea for help that I know is going to make the second show a huge success while giving me real citizens from the community to showcase what the show is really all about and a real story to follow. But there’s more.

Her sister then spoke up and said she had a story she wanted to tell. She’s from New York and had previously been in the FBI’s witness protection program for 15 years. It involved her sons and gangs. One of the reasons I wanted to do the show is to get the kind of credibility needed set up a program I think can change gang mentality nationwide into a positive force in whatever communities they are now problematic in.

Seek reality and you shall find it

The point is that every time I touch on the issue of a political reality TV show, things happen. I think there’s more than just me inspiring this vision I have for it. I think it’s part of our inevitable social evolutionary destiny, that there is no other direction we can go that will work while something out there knows we need to go this way and wants us to succeed at it.

Maybe I’m not good enough to make this happen. Maybe you are. So don’t sit around waiting for me to get this right. If you take the initiative to try, I believe you’ll find strange luck around every corner helping you make this dream a reality. And if you do take this idea and roll with it, if you’re successful, don’t forget who turned you onto this new spirit of democracy. I might need a hand up in some of my other initiatives that are so hard to get taken seriously living here just a few miles from our nation’s capitol. As much as you would think the contrary, this town is not open to change, unless you have a great deal of money. Then it is open for sale.

I have my own story to tell about the FBI crashing more doors in and taking my computers just before the Iraq war started. I was writing about  the real reason that war was needed so badly by the Bush administration. But that’s a topic for another article, like these here that you can read by going to  “The whole Wendy - Phil Gramm/ Enron/ MTBE story” or “The whole story about why the world is falling apart” or even this one tells a lot “Chandra Levy - What’s missing from the Washington Post’s story?”

Just be aware that a lot of what you learn from them will not appeal to you if you’re partisan of the left or right supporting either Republicans or Democrats blindly. They are all part of the problem which is why the whole system needs to be turned upside down and shaken out. Political reality TV can do it without anyone getting hurt. In fact quite to the contrary, it will make healing this country exciting while creating new hope and opportunity to help offset the catastrophic economic policies our leaders are using now to send us all to the poor house.

If you want to be a star in the publics eye, don’t head East to Washington or West to Hollywood. Your own backyard might be the most fertile proving grounds for you to launch a successful career from. It certainly is the least competitive right now but might not be for long if this idea takes off.
