How does Cephalon intend to shift patients to Nuvigil?
http://www.provigil-rx.info: The pharmaceutical industry is no stranger to dirty tricks and shady dealings in a bid to keep its customers coming back time and again. Although they would prefer to call it “just doing business”.
Indeed shifting patients from a soon-to-go-off-patent blockbuster, to its tweaked successor, whilst being frowned upon by the FDA, is old hat in the pharma biz.
Ever since drugmakers figured out that adding a time-release coating or other slight improvement could earn it a new round of patent protection, they've been developing strategies for competing against their own meds.
Raising the price of the old version to get patients to switch to the new brand, hoping they'll stick when the old one goes generic? Done. Touting the slight improvement as if it's a major advance? Also done.
If you're interested just what Cephalon might bring to its follow-up party, check out its Q2 earnings call. Jim Edwards at BNET Pharma did, and found that it's eyeing new indications--and a new focus on recently won indications--as a Nuvigil switching strategy.
According to the call transcript, it's also using price breaks: free samples, a seven-days-free coupon, co-pay assistance of up to $50 per scrip.
It's offering deals to insurance plans and managed care companies. All to capture brand business before the wakefulness med Provigil goes off patent, sometime before 2012.
But more about those new indications. At the end of June, Cephalon asked FDA to approve Nuvigil for jet lag disorder. It's studying Nuvigil as a treatment for sleepy brain-injury patients. It's plotting two Phase III trials of Nuvigil as an add-on for bipolar depression. It's enrolling for a IIB study in schizophrenia. And it's in the early stages of developing Nuvigil as a treatment for chemotherapy-related fatigue.
That's quite a range of uses. And at least in the case of jet lag disorder, one might argue--as BNET does in relation to Nuvigil's shift-work fatigue indication--that jet lag is a natural physical response that Type A business travelers hate. And those travelers would be quick to ask for Nuvigil even if their jet lag isn't extreme enough to be disorderly. That's all good for Nuvigil sales, of course.
And Provigil and Nuvigil together account for half of Cephalon's recent revenues. Stay tuned. SOURCE
Multiple sclerosis patient Sarah Martin believes cannabis is the best way to liberate herself from the daily pain she endures. She says just half a teaspoon in a hot drink will keep her pain-free and spasm-free for about three hours. She also uses a vaporizer to ingest the drug. But by obtaining the much sought after relief which enables her to walk a little more easily once her muscles have freed up , she becomes a criminal. She chooses not to take any regular - and legal - medication, maintaining it would give her side effects such as high blood pressure, ulcers and even the risk of heart failure and psychosis.
As if to prove the British public are forced to endure one rule for them and another for people in positions of power this was the moment UK newspaper the Daily Mirror exposed two London traffic wardens who were happy to sell the newspaper cannabis even though they were in uniform and patroling the streets of our Capitol city. A Swaggering traffic warden openly deals skunk cannabis while on duty in the street. He thinks nothing of handing over the illegal drug which carries a maximum 14 years jail for convicted dealers in a busy residential area.He was exposed by the Mirror in an undercover investigation in which he boasted he could get unlimited supplies of the dangerous Class B substance. His ticketing machine swinging around his waist, the chubby attendant also proudly claimed to be able to cancel any parking ticket if he gets the nod on the day it is issued.
A British man who served half of a seven year sentence for dealing in illicit drugs has set up again in a similar trade, but this time with a subtle difference. Yes he sells recreational drugs. But this time the drugs (like 2-DPMP, BK-MBDP and 4-MMCat, to name but three) are legal to buy and possess. Not only that but he can sell them with a clear conscience, as any adverse side-effects are covered with a weak, but clearly presented cloak of protection. The label reads Not for human consumption . It looks like coke. Acts like it too, or very similar at least, but this is in fact meeow meeow, (also known as 4-MMCatt or Mepherdrone)
