Its hard to believe there are so many books readily available to buy either online or in the High Street, which are associated to a practice which for all intents and purposes, is illegal for the majority of the world. The practice? Growing cannabis.
The only real problem with those books is that almost without exception these books tend to be written for an American market, and when you look at the facts I guess its only to be expected.
In the United States there are currently 13 states which operate legal medical marijuana programs. This equates to in the region of 25 million US citizens who have access to legal, state sanctioned medical cannabis with a doctors recommendation.
A doctor in a state with a marijuana program will write a recommendation for a plethora of conditions including AIDS, Cancer, Rheumatoid Athritis and Glaucoma, to name only 4.
But patients in the UK have long suffered the political argument which threatened of UN sanctions against the UK if they moved to decriminalise even the supervised use of cannabis. And a potent argument it was too, but not anymore.
In 2001 Portugal took the unprecedented step of decriminalising all drugs for personal consumption. Not just cannabis, but cocaine, heroin etc too.
This set a huge European legal precedent which to date, has not yet been argued against.
Their reasoning behind such a bold move was simple. A drug user should be treated as a medical, rather than a judicial case, and whilst the police will still take an active interest if a person is found to be in possession of a 'dealable' amount of drugs, for the person found in possession of a small amount for his or her own consumption, they are not arrested, and they are offered treatment and drug rehabilitation. And although the EU anti-drug lobby will voice all sorts of concerns at face value the scheme has proven a huge success, saving the Portuguese judicial system millions of euro's a year in cases for possession, which simply don't make it to court anymore.
In the UK however, things are very different. Under the current laws the police have absolutely no discretion, and if a person is found in possession they will be officially cautioned. If they are growing their own supply they WILL go to court and face the risk of a jail-term.
But that risk doesn't put many people off and cannabis cultivation in the UK remains a hugely popular 'hobby'. As a result books continue to be published in support of this hobby. And this is a good one. Check it out;
