Cannabis Growing Business Costs 200k in City Permit Fees Alone

Applicants will have to pay the city $211,000 in annual permit fees, carry $2 million in liability insurance and be prepared to devote up to 8 percent of gross sales to taxes.
The measure would also require bidders to meet certain labour, environmental and product safety standards.
Oakland City Council gave final approval Tuesday July 27th 2010, to a plan that makes Oakland the first city in the country to authorise large-scale industrial cannabis cultivation.
According to sources, the city of Oakland (presumably still sore at missing out on the 'Silicon Valley' Californian hi-tech boom) intends to license four production plants where marijuana would be grown, packaged and processed for medical use.
Supporters of the measure say it will create jobs and bring in much-needed revenue to Oakland. They also say it will give the city an advantage if California voters approve
the legalisation of recreational marijuana when Proposition 19 hits the ballot box in November.
Opponents argue the urban cannabis farms would put small medical marijuana growers out of business.
Interestingly, Councilwoman Desley Brooks said she hoped local business owners and minorities would be encouraged to apply, although the permits are NOT limited only to Oakland residents.
So if you know a friendly lottery winner with a few pounds to invest, this could be the opportunity you have been looking for.
