Cannabis Cultivator Winston Matthews Jailed for 16 Months Whilst Sex Offenders go Free
Cannabis Convict Winston Matthews will be struggling to digest his dinner this evening at High Down Prison in Surrey, as its come to light more than 35 sexual predators have been given a caution, a reprimand or a final warning instead of a custodial sentence.
Winston Matthews (55) from Horley in Surrey was sentenced to 16 months jail for repeatedly growing his own cannabis.
Mr Matthews has used cannabis for almost 40 years, to treat a serious back condition which happened when he was 16.
He became one of the most well-known cannabis activists in the United Kingdom after appearing at rallies and marches, on TV and in the press, to hilight the need for a change in the cannabis laws.
Changes which have since been called for by well known personalities such as Sir Richard Branson, Newport East MP Paul Flynn, Coventry MP Bob Ainsworth, as well as from the very top of the legal industry, when Bar Council chairman Nicholas Green QC attracted headlines by raising the question of whether personal possession of drugs should be decriminalised.
One thing everyone agrees on is the fact no person should be jailed simply for possessing cannabis. Especially so when there is no suggestion of supply.
Compare that with figures from files held by the Cumbria Constabulary for 2010 and 2011, which show a caution, reprimand or final warning was given to;
One person for exploitation of prostitution; Twelve for exposure and voyeurism; Two for sexual activity involving a child under 13; Three for sexual activity involving a child under 16; Fourteen for sexual assault on a female aged 14 and over; Two for sexual assault on a boy under 13; One for sexual grooming. Proving once and for all the British justice system has gone mad.
A police spokesman said; “An offender may be cautioned only where appropriate and usually only for 'less serious' sexual offences.
It would be interesting to find out how Cumbria Police decide on what is a 'less serious' sexual offence.
In the meantime Winston Matthews serves time in HMP High Down, for committing a crime in which he is the only victim, and that can't be right can it?
