Cannabis Council Members Threaten to Resign Over Reclassification Debacle
In whats turned into the hottest political potato of the year to date, groups from all quarters of society have given their opinions on the reclassification of cannabis.
There are some, like the Association of Chief Police Officers, who perhaps unsurprisingly, are calling for cannabis to be reclassified to a class B drug on the grounds of confusion amongst the general public? But the fact is there is no confusion.

It appears any scroat caught breaking into cars whilst in possession of a baggy of weed can say what he likes and the Police, always ready to oil their own wheels, will broadcast that as fact thereafter.

The truth is something quite different, as without the cannabis farm stories we all enjoy reading so much, there would be no drug victories to speak of as the police have virtually given up on the fight against class A drugs.

The reason David Blunkett initially relaxed the laws on cannabis was so Police could concentrate on class A drugs. But that hasn't happened, and rather than keep trying to break up the import of class A drugs the Police are finding it too easy to launch self-congratulatory campaigns against illegal immigrants who are growing cannabis which is rarely destined for the UK markets, but as no-one is checking traffic on the way out of Dover or the Channel Tunnel, we don't know for sure.

The Conservative party have also jumped on the wagon.

Ian Duncan Smith was in the news recently saying "We recommended regrading it to Class B and I'm very pleased that the Government is thinking of taking on our policies.

But reclassifying cannabis is not enough by itself, as it is about getting treatment and counselling for everybody convicted for a drugs offence, like in Sweden and Holland."

Although where IDS is getting those facts from is anyones guess?

As for the Home Office itself, who's job it is to come to a decision on whether the reclassify cannabis or not, there's a shroud of mystery after the last two weeks of "psuedo-paper trails" the Home Office has dropped in a bid to keep the hounds of their backs.

Since the turn of the year all the talk has been of Home Secretary Jacqui Smith and the fact she had allegedly leaked her plans to reclassify cannabis to the press. A fact one or two serving and former members of the ACMD, namely Les Iverson and the Reverend Blakeborough, seemingly took offence with.

Yet today we hear the Home Secretary, in a letter to Chairman of the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD), Professor Sir Michael Rawlins, is said to have suggested she still maintains an open mind on the topic?

Reverend Blakeborough, who runs the Kaleidescope Drugs Charity was quoted as saying, ""There is no significantly new evidence to suggest that cannabis is any more harmful than in the last review we did 18 months ago and the reason we need to look at this again is to show how tough the Home Secretary is on drugs".

Some of the members feel so strongly about this matter that they have suggested they will resign from the ACMD if the Home Secretary, in an unprecendented step, goes against the ACMD's advice, and reclassify's cannabis regardless of the advice given.

But if that is to happen surely we must question the validity and the expense of such a council, if the advice they give is not acted upon?

When all's said and done, whatever the Home Secretary and the Prime Minister decide, is what will happen ultimately. In the meantime, not one organisation has asked for the opinion of the people who actually use cannabis daily and that just doesn't seem right?

So much for a democracy.
