A NASA scientist named Drew Shindell who was chosen as among the top fifty scientists in the US in 2004, who has testified before a congressional committee that the Bush administration has been censoring his work, says that weather patterns we attribute to global warming are being caused by low level ozone, low level ozone forming pollutants, methane, and their interactions with atmospheric water vapor, not CO2. In fact he has answered my inquiries into validating my understanding of his theory saying carbon dioxide has nothing to do with what we see as daily symptoms of global warming, like what Al Gore claims.
What he says is that pollution is causing changes in the atmosphere as it is emitted so that the pollution we create today effects weather patterns today.
Ethanol in gasoline emissions along with pollution from ethanol refineries are the most extreme sources of the kinds of emissions that fit into Professor Shindell’s theory. Since ethanol began to be used and produced in extreme amounts in the spring of 2006, the US has suffered exaggerations of the kind of weather pattern changes Shindell relates in his work. Before ethanol was the source these weather pattern changing pollutants in amounts that cause dangerous changes in the environment, MTBE added to gasoline was produced the same kinds of pollutants, which ethanol replaced, because MTBE was polluting groundwater nationwide. They are both oxygenates. They both causes high levels of non-methane volatile organic compounds, NMVOC’s, or simply VOC’s, which react with smog and water vapor to form low level ozone in a radical chemical reaction with the suns ultraviolet rays.
In the early 1990’s, when MTBE use first began, California suffered from a severe drought that resulted in wild fires burning out of control frequently over a couple year period because there are no cities west of the state for water vapor to follow the jet stream from. East of California, the Midwest and Northeast were plagued by flooding as California’s water vapor was dropped there coming down from higher in the atmosphere than it would normally be without the extra polluting gases to carry it there.
In 1995, a switch was made to using MTBE at 15% rather than 10 percent where there was then enough pollution to allow for water vapor to be carried across the nation on the jet stream without falling until it cleared our polluted cites and fell into the Atlantic ocean or in Europe. In fact Britain had issued complaints that our driving habits during the workweek were causing it to rain there on the weekends.
