The great gasoline hoax deciphered for the uninitiated
In 1990, I was living under a bridge by the Washington DC Capitol beltway. Since you won’t believe this story anyway, I might as well tell you the whole thing because then I will know you won’t believe it so at least I will know how the story went over.
I was homeless because being outside on my own with no responsibilities was the only place I got any peace, which was long before the word homeless was applied to a popular street movement started by Ronald Reagan and Mitch Snyder in the 80’s as a way do deal with overcrowded mental hospitals.
I had basically reverted back to my animal self after the personality society replaced the one mother nature bore me with just wasn’t able to fool my natural instincts anymore. So I became a wild human animal and found a great deal of satisfaction in it. What had lead me to that point in my life was my father stalking me to try to put me in a mental hospital.
I was thrown out of school when I was 15, got my GED when I was 16, and was in college when I was 17 getting very competitive grades taking engineering courses and was working as s draftsman. It seems getting an education was not a problem for me when it was my choice and I could choose what I wanted to learn. But then I broke my leg in a motorcycle accident where the doctor who reset it did it wrong so I had a limp. So I got a job, went to work, and re-broke it on the job so I could get paid while I laid around bedridden for a another 16 weeks. And I happened to reset it myself before the ambulance arrived and did it perfectly. So when I healed, the limp was gone.
Then once I was back on my feet again, my parents were getting a divorce and wanted me out of the house so they could build new families. I didn’t want to work yet because I was afraid of breaking my leg a third time so I moved into an abandoned house and started walking 20 and 30 miles a day to get my leg strong again. But my father wouldn’t leave me alone always trying to get me put in a mental hospital because once I had been there for 45 days, I could get a free apartment. But I didn’t want any part of it. And the one time he was able to get me to go in and talk to them, they said there was nothing they could do for me because there was nothing wrong with me.
But still he kept after me making up stories and throwing me in jail time after time. Then his shrinks would show up trying to put me on medication which never worked because there was nothing wrong with me. Living in the woods was my way to find freedom from a society that to me had lost its mind.
So one day many years after I shook my father from my trail, I was walking down the highway reading a newspaper. I read them everyday knowing where the delivery guy threw away his extras, like I knew when the grocery stores threw away the things I needed to maintain a healthy diet. I read both the Washington Times and Washington Post. But I was following particularly The Washington Times and series of stories about a gasoline additive that was supposed to eliminate 70 percent of exhaust emissions from diesel fuel and gasoline while giving a great deal more mileage.
I didn’t drive so I didn’t care about the mileage. But I did live outside next to a crowded highway so I was concerned about the air I was breathing. I could taste blood when I went jogging so I was worried about it. But I liked living where I was so clean up the air would give me confidence that I could go on doing so. I lived by a stream where there was a lot of woods while the highway aqueduct tunnels and bridges made it easy for me to get up into town to get food and water or wash my clothes.
So the discovery about this gasoline additive that was made just outside the county I live in got a lot of people talking about it inspiring talk about forcing the oil companies to use it. In fact the Clan Air act of 1990 was inspired by the discovery. Bush was in office getting ready to start his bid for a second term in the White House and wanted to look like he was less of an oil man and more environmentally friendly. So he started talking like he would be willing to sign legislation to force the oil companies to us this additive, which is polysiobutylene, (PIB) a polymer that’s used in just about everything plastic, glue, many rubbers, explosives, food additive, bubble gum. It was already in gasoline at the time but in a shorter form.
But the oil companies said no way, they had no intention of going down a road that catered to clean air concerns or gave more mileage. And old man Bush really looked like he was going to stand up to his ole buddies showing them who runs this country. But when he wavered, they suggested that they might be willing to use an additive to gasoline called MTBE, which incidentally has PIB in it and was said to almost as good even though it was admitted that it got less mileage and would pollute groundwater.
So Bush went back to his new friends in the environmental community asking if that would be alright with them. They seemed to want to go for it as much as Bush did because neither one was very popular at the time but the scientific community was saying that MTBE was an environmental disaster waiting to happen. So on the night the deal was about to fall apart, a bunch of big corporate heads got together with leaders from the environmentalist community where they all decide that since we all live on the same planet and have no reason to want to ruin it, they could learn to get along working together to keep planet earth clean and free of pollution.
So they gave the environmentalists a 278 million dollars fund to help them with their work and the environmentalists signed off on MTBE, which was supposed to be as good as PIB because it has PIB in it, even though everything has PIB in it, even the gasoline they were talking about adding it to. And scientists that had been trying to tell everyone PIB was the way to go while MTBE would destroy the environment walked away scratching their heads in disgust. But by and large the American people didn’t know the details of this debate because they were watching Saddam Hussein invade Kuwait and then be chased out by our troops while this was going on. The Washington Post never even mentioned it PIB or MTBE during the debate process. But the Washington Times reported on it extensively.
Time went by. I forgot about it. A few years later, I moved inside and started being one of you people again. I started having health problems but didn’t know what was causing it. Then I drank some polluted well water and it sent my health into a tailspin. As it turned out, what was in the water was MTBE, the additive that was supposed to be as good as PIB because it has PIB in it. And after drinking the well water, I became chemically sensitive to MTBE in exhaust fumes which made my life hell since I lived so close to so much traffic even though I live in a house now.
Then after a year or so of trying to survive learning all I could about how MTBE effects my health and the environment around me, I discovered that it also effects weather patterns, that its emissions of formaldehyde mix with emissions from coal burning and diesel engines to form low level ozone while it all interacts with water vapor in such a way that it dramatically effects weather patterns. When it was first started to be used in 1993, California had a horrible drought because its water vapor was becoming gas by mixing with MTBE emissions causing it to rise higher than normal into the atmosphere where it was carried away and dumped in the Midwest. California on the other hand was plagued by wildfires, the opposite of the Midwest floods their rain was causing by not coming down where it was supposed to. It was much like what’s happening now since ethanol replaced MTBE because ethanol causes the same effect on weather patterns.
But that was back when MTBE was only used in highly polluted metropolitan regions during the winter months at 10% per gallon of gasoline. In 1995, MTBE started being used at 15 percent year round after which the whole country started to suffer from drought. But that all change in the summer of 1999 when I related what I had found out about it effecting weather patterns causing the drought to a reporter from the Washington Times where a few days later, president Clinton, VP Al Gore, the head of the EPA, and the head of the US Agriculture Department came out on a Sunday of all days and said MTBE use had to stop immediately.
A few weeks later, I was feeling better and weather patterns started to act normal. So began a never ending saga between me and our government trying to expose the truth about MTBE, that it’s tragically bad for air quality, that it doesn’t work, that it makes the air more dangerous, it costs more mileage than the amount added to gasoline, and the list goes on. I fought them it seemed endlessly to get rid of it even getting thrown in prison for 13 months were they flew me from here in Virginia to Houston handing my fate over to a federal judge who helped set up the MTBE industry before he was appointed to the bench by old man Bush.
And I did beat them where they actually stopped using it, or stopped pretending they were using it when they weren’t. See when they stopped using it in 1999, they did it without legislation to make it legal so it was a big secret. And they would even try to put it back in gasoline every now and then but I would get sick and weather patterns would get crazy again so I would start to harass them about it until they would have to take it back out because people were starting to listen to my crazy sounding story as weather pattern were following a weekly schedule because there is so much less driving on the weekends. Weather patterns would change from Monday to Friday and then again on the weekends doing it the same every week so people could remember back first hand when reading what I was telling them wondering if there might be something to what I was saying.
But when they locked me up, it rained and flooded for a few months because there was no one to stop them from using it, that is until I got settled and started writing letters which eventually lead to my coming home and the getting rid of MTBE altogether. But they replaced it with ethanol which causes the same kind of problems as MTBE where now they’re saying that this years flooding in the Midwest is worse than the last time it was so bad in 1993. And California is having its dry spells and fire problems again. But a lot of the flooding is also coming from the ethanol refineries themselves because of how much hot water vapor they emit along with the same pollution’s that adding it to gasoline causes.
So here I am fighting the same war I was fighting in 1999 trying to get people to listen to my story because it has to do with everything bad going on in the world today, enough so if everyone knew the truth about this cover-up, it would make it very difficult for the people behind all our problems to justify all the pretenses they’re putting up forcing the truth out into the open. And I assure you, if the world knew the truth behind what’s going on, a lot would change, fast. People think they’re mad now over all the terrible things going on. But just wait ‘til they here why. But that’s all not what this article is about.
What I’m writing about today is the answer to the burning question I’m sure you have foremost on your mind – What ever happened to PIB? I mean with the price of gasoline and everything else climbing so high along with concerns for global warming, which are really both just byproducts of MTBE and ethanol use and their related scandals, more mileage with less pollution would sound good to most people right now, especially if it wouldn’t cost any more money. And at an ounce to a 100 gallons, this additive can be stretched pretty far for just pennies on the dollar. I fact PIB is a produced from refining crude oil in the same kind of process, in fact in the same process that gasoline is. So really it can just be refined into gasoline, or really gasoline can be refined to have the properties that adding it to gasoline gives it.
But the question is does it work? And if so, why have they never gone back to revisit using it? Now in order to understand this story completely, you have to know that the first automobile engines had high compression ratios so they could burn either gasoline or ethanol, but not like the ethanol they’re adding to gasoline now, which is hydrous ethanol. Anhydrous ethanol is triple distilled and dangerous to handle or use as a fuel. There isn’t enough room on this page to say all the bad things about anhydrous ethanol.
But the early engines were designed to burn gasoline or hydrous ethanol, which is only distilled one time, like moonshine. So back in the good ole days, if there wasn’t a filling station around, which in most places there wasn’t, Americans simply made their fuel the same way they made their whiskey, until prohibition. By the time prohibition ended, gasoline was everywhere so ethanol as a fuel was forgotten about, which is what the oil industry and Washington wanted. And now that ethanol is back, they’re making a mess of it because they want us to always have to come to them for fuel which pretty much makes us their slaves.
One the other hand, they don’t want to sell us fuel that is the best that it could be, which it would be if they added PIB to it, or simply didn’t refine it out of it. See the old fashion gasoline burned just fine in engines with high compression ratios which could also burn hydrous ethanol. Then they came out with a theory called octane where they added lead to gasoline to stop knocking that didn’t exist. And lead caused a lot of problems for engines that were later solved by lowering compression ratio in engines so they couldn’t burn ethanol anymore so it couldn’t threaten the future gasoline if the word got out that ethanol works just like gasoline.
But that wasn’t why they did it. You won’t believe this but the facts speak for themselves. Lead added to gasoline to give it octane was eventually taken out because it was so dangerous for human health. But records going back to before lead was added to it show the government knew all along it was bad for the engines, human health, and the environment, like they knew about MTBE and know about ethanol now, or like how they knew about asbestos before they hired Halliburton to insulate building with it nationwide knowing it was a carcinogen and extremely dangerous. And Halliburton played a central role in the production of lead additives and MTBE.
Doesn’t anyone ever wonder how Halliburton got to be the biggest distributor to our government when they got their start selling us a defective poison product like asbestos insulation. It’s a little bit sick isn’t it. If I sold you poison to put in your pool that made you family sick, even killed your dog and neighbor’s kid, would you then hire me to run your house for you. But then you are not a government. And if you were, you would have made a mistake which only you and I would know about, which would mean you would have to give me anything I wanted or I would have no reason not to tell the story of how we both made a huge mistake because I would know that the last thing you could ever have happen is for it to be exposed you to made a mistake because then you wouldn’t get elected again.
But see with asbestos, we only here about the people it kills, not all the people it made ill that no one knew what the cause was who were treated with products made by companies that big corporations like Halliburton invest their profits in. So in the long run, they not only make money selling us defective products that allow them to run our government for us, they also make money selling us the cure for what they did to us. So now our financial markets are dependant on us being exposed to toxins because the worlds economy is needs us to buy never ending supplies of medical related products and services or the world’s banking system will crash. So lead was replaced by MTBE and MTBE was replaced with ethanol. Putting PIB on the market allowing us to be healthy while extending the world’s oil supplies because it give better mileage is a nonstarter because healthy Americans who senses are not constantly dulled by neurotoxins are just not going to provide easy harvests of wealth for our bankers.
It’s not a complicated equation. It’s been used for centuries, really since the dawn of time. Throw a lot of money around in any capitol of administering public affairs. Make the leaders of nations love you. Then sell them a big mistake while they’re laughing and smiling with you being surrounded by opulence far beyond what they’re used to. Then they easily believe whatever you have has to be good, like how Enron sold MTBE and Archers Daniel’s Midland sold ethanol. When it begins to become apparent that the administrators of the peoples affairs made a mistake, you own them, like we’re owned now by Halliburton, the oil industry, and the people on Wall Street who are now taking us to the bank over this latest ethanol scam.
Ok, back to PIB. So back in the good ole days, they made gasoline refining it into the best product that would work to power our engines because they didn’t know how else to do it. But not wanting ethanol to be a threat to their futures while plastic and other products that need PIB to be produced were competing for the same crude oil, they simply came out with gasoline that was less efficient making more PIB instead while the whole process lead to engines that needed less compression ratios.
But see nowadays, they can make pretty much anything from the same barrel of crude oil, meaning they’ve learned how to crack open thicker compounds in crude oil to make them thinner, or even combine thinner ones to make thicker ones. So they no longer look at a barrel of oil like it will only return a certain amount of any particular compound. So they can now refine gasoline the old fashion way and still have plenty of PIB to use in other products, they’re just not doing it as long as we don’t make them. But since they’re not going to listen to me, I gotta get you to understand this story so they’ll have to listen to all of us. And you’re not going to listen to me without evidence. So I went looking for some and struck gold, black gold, Texas tea. The story is however a little bit complicated to explain but this is how it went down.
The company that sells it had a contract in the late eighties to develop jet fuel that wouldn’t combust easily during fueling or in crashes. So this little company out here in Gainesville Virginia is working on it where a chemist named Paul Waters starts playing around with adding PIB to gasoline running it in different engines around the complex they’re working out of. Once he refined what we was doing down to an art, he found he was getting a lot more mileage with a lot less emissions while engines ran a lot cooler. But I’m not sure I trust that version of the story. It has to be mixed perfectly in very small amounts, part per millions. I add one and a half drops to a gallon in my gasoline to offset the mileage loss I get from ethanol. It’s just hard to for me to believe he figured it out by accident like he claims. And Gainesville Virginia, everything down that corridor between Washington DC and Dulles airport is CIA, and the darkest sides of it, parts that the government no longer knows about.
But without this so-called discovery, MTBE would never have been added to gasoline, which MTBE itself was supposed to have been invented by a guy in his mothers kitchen in Texas, which was the US version. The other is it was invented in the EU, which then the US patent was bought out by a Swiss conglomerate called ABB. I remember reading about an article around the same time PIB was discovered how there was an additive to gasoline proposed on Capitol Hill as the solution to air pollution that would cause smog from diesel and coal burning to rise up into the atmosphere, bake in the sun to become safe, then fall to the ground or into the Atlantic Ocean following the jet stream until it came down in rain. Of course it sounded crazy so no one would take it seriously other than to say they could never support something so risky playing with the atmosphere that way.
Then PIB was discovered. Then MTBE came along which MTBE was just supposed to help lessen carbon monoxide emissions in a few cars. But once it started being used, all anyone could say about it was that it got rid of smog. And once MTBE was chosen over PIB, no one ever talked about PIB again, not even the owners of the patent on it who stood to make billions if the truth about it was known - or would they?
See the only thing the truth about PIB does is get the American people demanding it be used in all crude oil fuels where the oil companies would simply come up with a way to refine it into our fuel without it being an additive, which they surely already know how to do so the patent would be useless, in fact it PIB as an additive would have to be removed from the market altogether because adding any more PIB to fuel that already has it in it would nullify the effects of what is already there.
So a few years ago I contact the owner of the patent explaining it was the best time to tell the American people about PIB because although the oil companies would undercut him by making gasoline with the same properties as PIB being added to it, since the world was falling apart because of how its economies were heading south because of high oil prices with fears of global warming threatening us if we survive what we’re doing to ourselves economically, making gasoline with the same properties as his additive would save the world where he could make more money writing a book about how he did it than trying sell his additive quietly the way he was.
Really I had more of a him and I save the world idea in mind. But he got belligerent with me and ended our discussions, which to me was a sign he had his own game plan that didn’t include me. Not long after that, I found out that the State of Texas had certified his new GTAT California office’s Viscon additive to diesel fuel as being able to bring 110 counties in Texas into compliance with EPA air quality standards. This was after years and years of no one believing me that this stuff exited, even with the owners of GTATech telling me that the additive was never introduced as a potential gasoline additive alternative to using MTBE. But if that were true, then how did I track down this story if I only based it on my memory of articles I read in 1990.
So today I went looking for how things are going down there in Texas where our gasoline decisions are made with them being able to use PIB for their air quality while the rest of us have to keep pretending there’s no way to make gasoline or diesel more efficient and less polluting. It’s just so ironic seeming but not at all surprising because Texas would obviously be where this story began when PIB would have been started to be removed from gasoline when it was decided that the oil industry should push the car industry towards manufacturing engines that won’t burn hydrous ethanol while polluting the environment in such a way to make great profits by their invested in medical related products and services.
You will never guess what I found –
In the - Texas environmental improvements Environmental Research through research and science Consortium - RESOLUTION - 2.23
Adopted and Approved this 29th day of August, 2007 -
Via wide-spread use of Viscon in the state of Texas it is intended to:
1- Provide a technology to refiners which otherwise would be non-compliant; (how to make diesel fuel that brings it up to the same standard as Viscon gives it)
2- Reduce fossil fuels usage and reliance on foreign sources; and ( the only way that could happen would be to increase mileage. Surprisingly, even though in the past, giving more mileage was Viscon’s main selling point, when talking about using it in Texas, the point seems to be moot other than this obscure reference)
I guess that wraps it up. I did have more to add to the story, the part I referred to in the beginning of the article that would have made it totally. But in looking back at what I wrote so far, actually I think you will believe me. Maybe you wouldn’t have last year or over the past ten years when I’ve tried to raise awareness about these issues before. But these days everyone is looking at Washington, Wall Street, and the oil industry thinking they all have a great deal they’re not telling us. So I expect for most people, it wouldn’t surprise them to the point of disbelief that they had come across a story that explained it to them. So if you want to hear the rest of the story, you will have to catch me back here in a few days telling a story that will stump even the most open minded of you.
