Morocco to (finally) legalise marijuana?

An invitation to open the public debate on the legalisation of cannabis and its useful applications in Morocco was tabled recently.

Under the auspices of :

- International Association Cannabis as Medicine

- European Coalition for Just and Effective Drug Policies

A group of participators in the Moroccan civil society have published a document entitled "Invitation to open the public debate on the legalisation of cannabis and its useful applications in Morocco".

This initiative came about after the failure of the erradication policies against the cultivation of cannabis in the north of Morocco, carried out under pressure of the UN and the EU. These policies have produced two results:

- the increase in the suffering of the peasants and their families, who after having their fields erradicated are not offered any kind of alternatives, which is in contradiction with national and international policies against poverty.

- many drug traffickers have changed their strategies towards the trade in illicit hard drugs and arms, that are sold to criminal and terrorist groups.

A true war against drugs trafficking should not be waged against cannabis plants or the people who cultivate them.

This initiative defends the proposal to legalise cannabis cultivation for therapeutic and industrial purposes, in the framework of an alternative economy in the regions where cannabis fields are being found.

Therefore the authors of the initiative propose to other participants and organisations in the Moroccan society:

- to organise scientific and political conferences and meetings to develop ideas on the issue within a framework of respect and democracy, in order to create a Moroccan forum to find a commective solution to the problems.

- to collaborate with international investigators and organisations who defend the therapeutic and industrial use of cannabis.

Therefore, the initiators prepare the organisation of the first public event on this issue in Rabat the coming month.
